Ningbo.fan is an editorial introduction, not an official tourism or relocation service. Neighbourhood impressions are cultural orientation rather than housing, legal or investment advice. Confirm opening hours, food ingredients and allergy concerns with the relevant venue.

## Brand architecture

The three meanings of “fan” follow the supplied Ningbo domain evaluation: **范** for the Fan family and Tianyi Ge, **饭** for Ningbo food, and **粉** for urban identity and community. English copy treats these as three ways to know and belong to the city rather than attempting an unnatural literal translation of every Chinese heading.

## Tianyi Ge and the Fan family

- Tianyi Ge was founded by the Ming official and book collector **Fan Qin (范钦, 1506–1585)**; construction began in **1561**. It is widely described as China's oldest surviving private library.
- Its collection once contained more than **70,000 juan** (卷). The site uses “volumes” as an approachable English approximation and avoids presenting this as the current collection size.
- The name invokes “Heaven is One” and the symbolism of water, reflecting the ever-present need to protect books from fire.
- The well-known family rule **“代不分书，书不出阁”** expresses keeping the collection intact across generations and restricting books from leaving the library. The English is an explanatory translation, not a quotation from a historical English source.
- The Fan residence and library were adjoining parts of a family setting. The site uses this relationship to explain the move from private collecting to a shared cultural legacy; it does not claim that every surviving structure dates from 1561.

## Food

The selection introduces recognisable Ningbo flavours: black-sesame tangyuan, water-milled rice cakes, red-roe marinated crab, yellow croaker with preserved mustard greens, Ningbo-style braised greens, and youzanzi. Descriptions are general cultural summaries, not recipes or claims about a particular restaurant. Raw or marinated seafood carries food-safety risks; visitors should make informed choices.

## Community and place

The Old Bund stands near the confluence of the Yong, Fenghua and Yuyao rivers. Moon Lake/Tianyi Ge, the Old Bund/Sanjiangkou and the newer eastern districts are used as contrasting settings for everyday life, not as a ranked list of places to live.
